LYNCH Wines
These wines are outstanding examples of the Spring Mountain terroir, which delivers red wines of exceptional texture and layered complexity. The Lynch wines won't be easy to find because of the philosophy of limited production, so your best bet is probably a high-end restaurant or the Internet.

2002 Lynch Cabernet Sauvignon
Dan Lynch is one of the characters of the Napa Valley and this wine of his is full of character. Right now, it's very young with hints of milk chocolate and sweet malted milk flavors from the oak. But I'm reasonably sure that will integrate with time.

In the meanwhile, it's very dark in color and is soft on the palate with warm black fruit flavors. The wine is unctuous and elegant, with a satin-like body with loads of that heretofore mentioned sweet dark fruit and chocolate. However, there's an underlayment of gritty tannins to ensure some of that character and a bit of longevity. Hold on to it for a year or so and then drink it over the next eight years.

The grapes come from the estate's Lynch Knoll vineyard on lower Spring Mountain. It is the fourth vintage from this parcel; and it was made by longtime Napa Valley winemaker Gary Galleron. The varietal composition is 94.95 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 4.8 Merlot, 0.2 Syrah. The listed alcohol percentage is a welcomed 13.9 percent. The suggested retail price is $60. There were only 142 cases made.

2002 Lynch Syrah
There were only 63 cases made of this wine. But thanks to the American public's disenchantment with California Sangiovese (which is another story, and a sad one I think), we're going to see a lot more of Dan Lynch's Syrah. That's because he's pulled out his one-acre Sangiovese vineyard and has replanted it with Syrah, which means that production (with the addition of a few rows replacing some Cabernet Sauvignon) will now double to a mere 130 cases from the two acres. That means more Lynch Syrah, made by Gary Galleron, for us. This rendition - from only the fourth leaf -- is tight, dry and spicy. On the palate there are flavors of raspberries with a texture that has a lot of character, chewiness and guts. Drink it now and over the next half-dozen years. The $65 price is steep, but hey, it's an awfully good wine that will keep on giving for a while. The blend has 4.4 percent of Cabernet. The alcohol is high - 15.3 percent - but it is well-integrated.

2002 LYNCH Syrah - 92 Points
Dark and dense with notes of choco-late, spice and blackberry; rich and oaky with serious aging potential.

2002 LYNCH Cabernet Sauvignon - 92 Points
Balanced in rich tannins and acids, with solid cassis and cherry fruit and a sweet veneer of oak, its splendid tonight with a steak, but should really hit its stride in a few years.

2002 LYNCH Syrah - 90 Points
This Syrah aims high. It's dry, rich and full-bodied, with rich tannins and oak, and is fruity enough for the core of cassis to develop for several years.

2002 LYNCH Sangiovese - 90 points
Brilliant garnet-ruby red hue. Cherry, sage and cinnamon aromas. Medium-full with very good concentration, this has a nicely structured finish with nice persistence of fruit, lively acidity and ample oak.

2004 Napa Dan Chardonnay
Lush, ripe fruit aromas with a touch of pineapple lead to a rich mouthful of wine. Lots of fruit, plenty of oak linger long on the palate. "A long finish"you would say. A big, full wine with lots of richness.

2002 Napa Dan Cabernet Sauvignon
Intensely dark red color with cooked cherries and cassis aromas dominating. Lots of fruit forward flavors on the palate followed by very soft tannins. Already soft enough to drink.

2002 Napa Dan Cabernet Sauvignon - 90 Points
Polished as the sheen on a ripe black cherry, there isn't a rough edge to this Napa Cabernet. It's a clean, sleek pleasure that will enrich a steak.

2003 Napa Dan Pool Yard Chardonnay
This very fine Chardonnay reminds me of a modern Chablis: barrel aging in new French oak, but no malolactic fermentation. Green apples, pineapple, mango, and vanilla oak.
